SUPERMAC’S IRELAND REVIEW: Our Honest First Impression

If you’re planning a road trip through Ireland, chances are you’ll come across Supermac’s sooner or later — and in this Supermac’s Ireland review, we want to share exactly what happened when we did. It wasn’t planned at all. Our first stop was Supermac’s Portlaoise Town, right after picking up our Three Ireland prepaid SIM card at the Three store just around the corner. It was lunchtime, we had zero motivation to cook in the van or hunt down a restaurant, and Supermac’s happened to be right there as we stepped out of the shop. So that’s how our Supermac’s journey began — completely by accident.

Our First Supermac’s Meal

We ordered three meals to share: a 5oz Burger Menu, a Chicken Tenders Menu, and a Chicken Nuggets Menu. What struck us immediately was the portion size — even split between the three of us, we still had fries left over. The total came to just over €35, which felt more than fair given how much food we actually got. Coming from Germany, where fast food combo meals of this size would easily cost more, this was a pleasant surprise right from the start.

More Visits, Same Impression

Over the following weeks of our trip, we ended up stopping at a few more Supermac’s locations along the way. At a couple of these stops we also tried the Papa John’s pizza available at some Supermac’s branches (many locations operate as a combined outlet), and here too we were positively surprised by both the quality and the price. It wasn’t a one-off — the value held up consistently across different locations.

Supermac’s vs. McDonald’s and Burger King: What’s Different?

Unlike McDonald’s or Burger King, Supermac’s is a genuinely Irish chain, founded in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, back in 1978 — not an international franchise. According to Supermac’s own description of their food sourcing, the chain works with a network of Irish suppliers and farm families across the country, emphasizing fresh, never-frozen ingredients rather than frozen supply chains, including working with a long-established Irish burger producer for its beef products.

In practice, that translated for us into noticeably larger portions and a different flavor profile than the global chains — plus a menu that leans into Irish staples (like their well-known Snack Box) that you simply won’t find at McDonald’s or Burger King. Price-wise, our experience was that you get more food for your money at Supermac’s, without a drop in quality.

FAQ: Supermac’s Ireland

How many Supermac’s locations are there?
Supermac’s operates around 120 restaurants across Ireland, making it one of the country’s largest homegrown fast food chains — alongside locations that include attached Papa John’s or SuperSubs outlets.

What makes Supermac’s so different?
Supermac’s is proudly Irish rather than an international franchise, sources ingredients from Irish suppliers, and is known for significantly larger portion sizes at competitive prices compared to McDonald’s or Burger King. For us, that combination of quality, quantity, and fair pricing was the standout every single time.
