After our walk at Keel Beach, we drove north over the Slievemore road to Dugort Beach, the second beach of our unplanned afternoon on Achill Island. In this post we share how parking on the grass went with our van, what the beach is like, when the lifeguards are on duty, why you should check the tides, and whether Dugort Beach is worth the extra drive from Keel.

Where Is Dugort Beach on Achill Island?
Dugort Beach sits on the sheltered north coast of Achill Island, right below Slievemore, the island’s highest mountain. Here is the beach on Google Maps. Locally it is also known as Silver Strand or Pollawaddy, and in Irish the village is called Dumha Goirt. According to Discover Ireland, the bay looks out over Blacksod Bay and lies within a Special Area of Conservation, with machair grassland behind the sand.
The village of Dugort has an unusual history. In the 1830s a Protestant mission, known locally as “the Colony”, was set up here, with schools, an orphanage, a printing press and a mill. Today it is a quiet little place with a pier, a few houses and two Blue Flag beaches: Dugort Beach (Silver Strand) below Slievemore, and the larger Golden Strand further east.

Getting There: The Slievemore Road from Keel
From Keel we took the road north along the flank of Slievemore towards Dugort. The views of the mountain alone made this drive worth it, and we did it in our Ford Tourneo Custom.
If you have more time than we did, the Deserted Village at Slievemore lies along the same stretch between Keel and Dugort. Around 80 to 100 ruined stone cottages line the slope, with a car park by Slievemore Old Cemetery. We did not stop there on this day, but it is an easy addition to the same loop.

Dugort Beach Parking: Is It Van-Friendly?
Parking at Dugort Beach is free, and there is no height barrier. When we arrived, we first looked for a spot on the unsurfaced grass area above the beach. Take a little care here: the ground is not completely level, so if your vehicle has low ground clearance, pick your spot carefully and avoid the dips.
With our Tourneo Custom it worked fine. The only tight part is the entrance, which is quite narrow. With a larger motorhome we would take it slowly or check first whether there is space to turn. We did not stay overnight, so we cannot say whether overnight parking is tolerated here. If you want to stay in the area, there is a campsite in Dugort village.
What Is Dugort Beach Like?
Compared with Keel Beach, Dugort is much smaller. But it has one big advantage: the beach is sandy rather than stony. When we were there it was also relatively quiet, which was a nice change after the busier car park at Keel.
It is a small, sheltered bay with Slievemore rising directly behind it, which gives it a very different feel from the long, open Atlantic beach at Keel. Discover Ireland notes that at spring tides rocks and pebbles can be washed up onto the upper part of the beach, so how sandy it looks can change with the season and the sea.

Can You Swim at Dugort Beach?
Yes. Dugort is a Blue Flag beach, and the bathing water is rated excellent; the Connaught Telegraph lists Dugort among the Mayo beaches with excellent water quality in the EPA’s 2025 report. According to Mayo County Council, lifeguards are on duty from 12:00 to 18:30 at weekends and on bank holidays in June, every day in July and August, and on the first weekend of September. Outside those times there is no lifeguard cover, so only swim when the sea is calm and stay within your depth.
We did not go into the water ourselves. By the time we reached Dugort it was already late afternoon, and after about 30 minutes we set off towards our accommodation.
If you visit with a dog: the council says dogs are not allowed in the Blue Flag area in summer between 12:00 and 18:30. Outside the Blue Flag area, dogs on a lead are allowed.
Dugort Beach Tide Times
Dugort is a small bay, so the tide decides how much sand you have to walk and sit on. For a swim, a beach walk or a longer stay, it is worth checking the tide times before you drive over.
The Marine Institute tide predictions are the official source for Irish tide times, and the free MyTide.ie app uses the same data. For a quick look, this 14-day tide table for Achill Island is handy. All of these are predictions: strong wind and low pressure can push the water higher than forecast.
What We Pack for a Day at Dugort Beach
The same beach kit is always in our van. At Dugort we left it inside, because it was already too late in the day for a swim. On a sunny morning, though, this sheltered sandy bay is exactly where we would use it, and the walk from the grass car park to the sand is short:
- Pop-up beach shelter: our own shelter against wind and sun is this quick-up beach tent with UPF 50+. Even in a sheltered bay like Dugort, the wind off Blacksod Bay can be cool, so a windbreak makes a long afternoon far more comfortable.
- Bodyboard: we use this light bodyboard with a leash, which is easy to throw in the boot. At Dugort, only use it when the lifeguards are on duty or on calm days, and stay close to shore.
- Large beach towel: we use towels very similar to this XXL microfibre towel. They dry quickly and pack small, which helps when the next shower is never far away on Achill.
- Swim vest for children: we also bring this swim vest for kids. It does not replace watching them, but it gives a bit more confidence in the water.

Dugort Beach vs Keel Beach: Is It Worth Visiting?
If you are already at Keel, yes. The drive over the Slievemore road is short and scenic, and Dugort offers what Keel did not give us: soft sand and a calmer atmosphere. Keel is bigger and more dramatic; Dugort is smaller and more relaxed. For families who want to swim, or anyone who prefers sand to pebbles, Dugort is the better pick of the two.
It is not a place you need hours for unless you plan to swim or spend the afternoon on the beach. As a stop on a loop around Achill Island, it fits in easily.

Our Honest Takeaway
Achill Island was an unplanned detour for us, squeezed into an afternoon after a rainy morning. We only had about half an hour at Dugort Beach and did not go into the water, but we were glad we saw it. Small, sandy and quiet below Slievemore, it was a nice contrast to the busy, stony beach at Keel. Just watch the uneven ground and the narrow entrance when you park, and come earlier in the day than we did if you want to swim.

Dugort Beach FAQ
Where do you park at Dugort Beach?
There is a free, unsurfaced parking area on the grass just above the beach. There is no height barrier, so vans and campervans can get in, but the entrance is narrow and the ground is uneven. Vehicles with low ground clearance should choose their spot carefully.
Is Dugort Beach good for swimming?
Yes. Dugort Beach is a sheltered Blue Flag bay with excellent bathing water quality. Lifeguards are on duty in June at weekends, daily in July and August, and on the first weekend of September, from 12:00 to 18:30. Outside those times, only swim in calm conditions.
Are there toilets at Dugort Beach?
When we visited there were two portable toilets near the parking area. Mayo County Council also lists toilets at the lifeguard hut during the bathing season. Facilities can change, so do not rely on them outside the summer months.
Are dogs allowed on Dugort Beach?
Dogs are not allowed in the Blue Flag area in summer between 12:00 and 18:30. Outside the Blue Flag area, dogs on a lead are permitted, according to Mayo County Council.
Which is better, Keel Beach or Dugort Beach?
It depends on what you want. Keel Beach is much larger, more open and more dramatic, but its upper beach is stony and it gets busy because of the campsite next to it. Dugort Beach is smaller, sandy and was much quieter when we visited. For swimming and families, we preferred Dugort.
How do you get from Keel to Dugort Beach?
From Keel, follow the road north along the side of Slievemore towards Dugort. It is a short drive with great mountain views, and it passes close to the Deserted Village at Slievemore, which you can easily add as a stop.
Where We Went Next
After Achill Island, our next travel day took us south: we packed up the van, left our base in Lisacul and set off for Farranfore in County Kerry. Our first stop on that long drive was Lough Bunny, a quiet limestone lake on the eastern edge of the Burren in Co. Clare, with almost white shallows and Mullaghmore in the background.
