BLACK ROCK SANDS: The Beach You Can Drive Onto in Wales

Most beaches, you park somewhere nearby and haul your gear across the sand. Black Rock Sands, near Morfa Bychan on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, does things differently: you drive your car straight onto the beach and park right next to the water. That’s the whole appeal, and it’s a genuinely fun novelty the first time you do it.

Where Black Rock Sands Is

Black Rock Sands sits at Morfa Bychan, just outside Porthmadog on the North Wales coast, within the Llŷn Peninsula and close to Snowdonia. It’s a long, flat, sandy beach — easy driving conditions once you’re on the sand, and the kind of open space that makes the drive-on setup work in the first place.

Driving Onto the Beach

This is the reason to visit. You pay at the beach entrance, drive down a slipway, and you’re on the sand — free to find your own spot rather than being stuck in a fixed car park. It’s an unusual experience if you haven’t done it before, and it makes a day at the beach noticeably easier if you’ve got kids, gear, or just don’t want to walk far from the car.

A couple of practical points worth knowing:

  • There’s a speed limit on the beach (10 mph), so this isn’t a place to drive fast — it’s about convenience, not a joyride.
  • Vehicles are generally allowed to park from around 9am, and the beach closes to cars in the evening (around 8pm), so don’t plan on staying past closing with your vehicle still parked on the sand.

Parking Cost at Black Rock Sands

Driving onto Black Rock Sands isn’t free — there’s a parking fee charged at the beach entrance. We don’t remember the exact amount from our visit, and based on what we’ve seen since, the price has changed over time and can vary — so treat any number you read online, including this post, as a rough guide rather than gospel. Check current pricing before you go, ideally via the official council page linked below.

Watch the Tides

Because you’re parking directly on the sand, tide timing actually matters here in a way it doesn’t at most beaches — leave your car in the wrong spot at the wrong time and the incoming tide can genuinely reach it. When we visited, staff on site gave us a heads-up about the tide situation before we drove down, which made it a non-issue. If you’re not getting that kind of guidance when you arrive, it’s worth checking tide times yourself before choosing where to park.

Official Information

For current parking prices, opening times, and rules, the local council (Cyngor Gwynedd) publishes the official page for beach parking here: Seasonal Beach Parking – Morfa Bychan (Black Rock Sands). Visit Snowdonia also has a helpful overview page: Black Rock Sands – Visit Snowdonia.

Final Thoughts

Black Rock Sands is worth the stop for the novelty alone — there aren’t many beaches in the UK where driving straight onto the sand is part of the experience. Budget a little for parking, keep an eye on the tide (or trust the staff if they’re giving you guidance), and you’ve got an easy, low-effort beach day.
